Use Case 6 – Robotic automation for insole packing

This use case presents a particularly difficult challenge to robotic automation: packing flexible insoles into extremely pliant thin plastic bags. At INESCOP, this final step in the production of insoles for shoes is currently done by human operators that may be forced into adopting unergonomic postures and execute highly repetitive movements. Automating this process would not only relieve the operator of these risks but also streamline and accelerate the process.

The operator needs to stand at a table for hours. From picking up the insoles and selecting the plastic bags to placing the insoles inside the bags, the movements put strain on the neck and back of the workers. This challenging work environment causes quick physical fatigue while the limited set of repetitive movements exhaust the mind. Automating this process will unburden the worker.

Different types of insoles are produced that vary in weight, dimensions, rigidity, and frictional properties. Consequently, each type of insole requires a unique approach. In addition, the bags, too, vary depending on the type of insole. The robotic manipulator, therefore, needs to identify the product, select the correct bag, and then perform manipulative actions that are unique to each type of insole to place the product inside the thin bag without damaging either bag or insoles.
